Trail Rides at the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown 2017

Posted May 27th 2016

In the spring and summer months, to raise money to support the horses, the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown offers 2 and 3-day weekend pack trips to the public. Each day ride the trails created by the wild horses and burros through pine and oak-studded hills and volcanic rock out croppings--a bit of paradise dotted with meadows, woods, creeks, and ponds. Bordering Vernal Lake, our base camp consists of frontier style sleeping cabins: a "cook" house featuring a main kitchen, a wood-burning stove, hearty meals, and bathroom facilities, complete with hot shower. Evenings are spent relaxing around a glowing campfire and enjoying a peaceful night's rest after a day of adventure.

The Sanctuary is rich in Indian and pioneer history. There are remnants of homesteads, Indian camps, arrowheads, and petroglyphs. The existing ranch house is the site of a past circuit court, complete with hanging tree!

Whether riding the valley floor or the rugged, rock-strewn ridges of the Sanctuary, visitors enjoy the excitement of wild herds grazing and running free in their natural surroundings. They share their natural setting with black bear, deer, quail, dove, wild turkey, gray fox, coyote, raccoon, badger, bobcat and mountain lion; also hawks, owls, bald eagles and 150 varieties of song birds.

Rides go out rain or shine. Be prepared to experience the west as it really is.
